# Overview

A Communication Gateway refers to the specific method or mechanism used to deliver a notification/message to a user or system. Notifications are messages or alerts that inform users or systems of important events or changes that have occurred in an application, system, or device.

Apex platform offers following Notification gateways:

- SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol)
- SMS (Short Message Service)

Email gateways and SMS (Short Message Service) gateways are used to transmit messages between different systems or devices.
