This report provides IT and SAM teams with comprehensive visibility into device inventory by environment, device type, and operating system, facilitates OS standardization by highlighting variations and redundancies, supports license compliance and strategic planning by reconciling OS deployments with entitlements, enhances IT operations through informed upgrade and patch management, and strengthens security and governance by flagging non-standard or region-specific OS versions for additional compliance scrutiny
Report Usage
The following section provides an overview of key activities involved in identifying, correcting, and optimizing user-based software subscriptions.
Activity | Description |
Device Inventory Tracking | Gain a clear understanding of the number of devices present within each environment, device type, and operating system. |
OS Standardization | Identify the range and diversity of operating systems in use—such as various editions of Windows 11—to help reduce complexity and promote standardization. |
License Compliance and Planning | Support accurate licensing of operating system deployments by comparing device counts against available entitlements, ensuring compliance and aiding future licensing strategies. |
IT Operations | Facilitate effective planning for upgrades, patch management, or migrations by knowing exactly how many devices are running each specific operating system. |
Security and Governance | Detect any non-standard or region-specific operating system versions that may require additional compliance review, thereby strengthening overall security and governance. |
Example
Before starting an OS migration initiative, the Infrastructure Team reviews the Device – Device Summary report to understand how many devices are running specific operating systems, such as Windows 10 or Windows 11.
By filtering the report by Business Unit and Environment, the team identifies which departments have the highest concentration of outdated systems. This helps them prioritize upgrade recommendations and plan resources accordingly.
This summarized visibility enables effective migration planning, reduces risk, and ensures that end‑user environments remain compliant and secure.
