Streamline insights and simplify management with Category configuration!
Category refers to a logical grouping or classification that aids in organizing and categorizing Configuration Item within the CMDB system.
To organize and comprehend the links between various configuration items, categories are used to aggregate comparable types of configuration items together. Each category typically denotes a certain CI type or section of the IT infrastructure. Depending on the needs of the company, the exact categories utilized in a CMDB can change.
The following list covers the example of categories available under the CMDB module:
- Services
Business Service -IT Helpdesk
Technical Service - Infrastructure
Server
Storage
End User
Network
Categorization in CMDB consists of the following steps:
- Identification
- Grouping
- Attributes and Relationships

NovaTech is a medium-sized company that relies on its IT Infrastructure including a variety of servers. Sandra has been tasked with setting up and using a CMDB to manage several configurations effectively. | The first step when it comes to handling resources in a multitude is categorizing or organizing them. Sandra can initiate the process by defining the categories as per the requirements and criteria which aids in effective management of IT infrastructure. |
Configure a Category
To configure a CMDB Category, perform the following steps.
1. Navigate to Design Studio > Module > CMDB > Configurations > CMDB Configuration > Category.

2. Select the desired Tenant from the drop-down, which is a mandatory field. The available CMDB classifications are displayed.

3. To define different CMDB classifications, right-click next to CMDB classification space. A small configuration pop-up will be displayed. Select any desired options to add or modify the available category definitions.

4. Click SAVE to save and publish the changes.
Field Description
This table contains the list of fields and their descriptions that are available under the Category segment:

Tenant * | Select a Tenant from drop-down. This is a multiselect field. For more information, refer to Tenant. |
CMDB Classification | Reflects the available classification segments of CMDB |

Create Root Node | Select this option to create a root node that acts as a top-level node in the tree or hierarchy. |
Create Child Node | Select this option to create a child node that acts as a subordinate or subsidiary to the existing root (parent) node in the tree or hierarchy. |
Rename | Select this option to rename the category classification. |
Deactivate | Select this option to deactivate the category classification. |
Set as Default | Select this option to make the particular category classification as a default classification. |
Add Icon | Select this option to upload an icon. |
Add Description | Describe the category classification in this field. |
