System Defined Controls

Article summary

System-defined controls are automatically created by the system when a new form is created. If the properties of system-defined fields are modified, then those changes will be reflected in the database. For Example: If the label field is changed from ID to ID_Incident then the database gets updated automatically with new label name as ID_Incident.

The System Defined Fields under the Fields section will be non-editable in the case when a new table is created which is extended from an existing table.

There are 6 system defined controls available, by default on a form creation as shown in the following screenshot.

System defined controls are automatically added to the form table.

Let's explore the following use-case.


Use Case

User Persona: Application Designer

Solution
The Application Designer Sam wants display the name of the person who created the incident and when it was created automatically along with Symptom and Description field on the Incident Details page.
To achieve this, he can drag and drop the Created By and Created On system fields from on the Form Designer canvas. The Created By field will display the name of the person who logged the incident and Created On field will display the date on which the incident was created. 

Configure System Defined Controls

Perform the following steps to configure the system defined controls:

  1. Navigate to General tab of Form Designer. Enter all mandatory details required for the form.
  2. In Design Form tab, from the left pane select Controls > Form Controls > System Defined Controls. It displays all available system defined controls. Drag and drop this control on form designer canvas for configuration. There are following types of system defined controls:
    • ID
    • Auto ID
    • Created On
    • Created By
    • Updated On
    • Updated By
  3. Click Settings iconto configure the properties.

You can view the following tabs for ID control:

Properties

This section contains the list of properties using which the Administrator can configure the respective control's name, subtitles etc. To know more about the fields that are available under the Properties section, see Field Description given below.

Field Description
This table contains the list of fields and their descriptions that are available under the Properties section:

General

Label
Specify the name for the ID control. This name identifies the ID control.

Appearance

This section contains the list of validation setups using which the Administrator can configure the visual appearance and style of the respective system defined field control. To know more about the fields that are available under the Appearance section, see Field Description given below.

This table contains the list of fields and their descriptions that are available under the Appearance section:

Label
The Label section allows you to configure the font type, color, size and style of the label as shown in the following screenshot:

Font TypeSelect the type of the font for the label of ID field from the drop-down list of available options of font type.
Font ColorSelect the type of the font color for the label of ID field from the color widget from the provided set of color options. Click option to select the required color from the displayed color widget. A sample screenshot is shown below:
Font SizeSelect the size of the font for the label of ID field from the drop-down list of available options of font type using upwards or downwards arrows. A sample screenshot is shown below:Figure: Font Size Drop-down
You can also use a horizontal slider to increase or decrease the font size. A sample screenshot is shown below:

Font StyleSelect the required font style for the label of ID field. Available options are as follows:
  • B - Select it to make the heading bold.
  • I - Select it to make the heading italics.
  • U - Select it to make the heading underlined.

ValueThe Value section allows you to configure the font type, color, size and style of the value as shown in the following screenshot:

Font Type

Select the type of the font for the value of ID field from the drop-down list of available options of font type.
Font Color

Select the type of the font color for the value of ID field from the color widget from the provided set of color options. Click option to select the required color from the displayed color widget. A sample screenshot is shown below:

Font Size

Select the size of the font for the value of ID field from the drop-down list of available options of font type using upwards or downwards arrows. A sample screenshot is shown below:Figure: Font Size Drop-down
