Previously, Service Automation was accessed as a separate application, opened in a different browser tab. To reduce context switching and deliver a single, cohesive automation workspace, SA has been integrated directly inside APEX. All SA features are now discoverable and configurable in one place, enabling simpler administration and a more consistent user experience.
Key outcomes:
Single-entry experience: Users stay inside APEX for all SA activities.
Centralized control: Permissions are managed through Users > General > Role Template.
Cleaner information architecture: Application Settings are consolidated inside Configuration.
What’s New?
SA is now a native within APEX.
Role Template governs access to SA (enable/disable module and set permissions).
Edit supersedes View: when Edit is enabled, View is implicitly granted and shown as greyed out.
All SA menus (Dashboard, Skills, Workflows, Schedulers, Integrations, Reports, Configuration) are individually permissioned.
Application Settings relocated: Now in Configuration.
Configure Role Template for Service Automation
Access to Service Automation is governed through the Role Template configuration in APEX.
To enable role template, perform the following steps:
Navigate to Users > General > Role Template.
Select Domain on the Filters for which you must enable and configure Service Automation.
Select Super Admin or any other applicable role template.
Note
The Super Admin role template cannot be edited. When this template is selected, the Submit button is not displayed. To make changes, the admin must choose a different role template.
In the left panel select Service Automation to view and edit the permissions.

For each SA menu (Dashboard, Skills, Workflows, Schedulers, Integrations, Reports, Configuration), choose View or Edit.
If you select Edit, View becomes greyed out (implied).
Save the Role Template.
Note
If Edit is enabled, View is automatically greyed out.
Edit implies higher privilege, meaning it includes View access by default.
Administrators may selectively grant or restrict access per SA component.
This ensures simplified access management while preventing conflicting permission combinations.
Role templates allow administrators to provide View or Edit permissions across all Service Automation menus, that include the following:
Menu | Typical Capabilities (View) | Typical Capabilities (Edit) |
|---|---|---|
Dashboard | View widgets, KPIs, current automation status, and the Live Feed.
| View configured dashboard cards/widgets, thresholds, and layout.
|
Skills | View available skills and their metadata. | Create/edit skills; manage assignment or categorization. |
Workflows | View workflow list and definitions; inspect run history in read-only mode. | Create/edit/publish workflows; manage versions and triggers. |
Schedulers | View job schedules and statuses. | Create/edit/disable schedules; change timing/recurrence. |
Integrations | View configured integrations and endpoints. | Add/edit credentials, endpoints, mappings; enable/disable connectors. |
Reports | View prebuilt reports and manage report filters. | Create report definitions; manage distribution and filters. |
Configuration | View current SA configuration and settings. | Full configuration control; includes Application Settings (moved here from Top panel). |
After enabling Role Template, log in to the application with the persona configured on the role template.
Example: if you have configured for Super Admin template, log in to the application as a user with Super Admin access.
In the Apex application select SA workspace.
