This Device Origins (Data Origins) report provides a detailed overview of the origin and key attributes of each device asset, clearly indicating the source of asset data and the number of sources that report each individual device. By capturing this information, the report enables stakeholders to understand the provenance of asset records, assess the reliability and consistency of data across multiple sources, and identify potential discrepancies or redundancies. This comprehensive approach supports improved data accuracy, effective asset tracking, and enhanced management of device inventories within the organization.
Usage
This monitors and documents the sources of device data throughout the organization, thereby promoting data accuracy and integrity within the asset management system. By capturing and analyzing the origins of asset information, the report facilitates the identification of duplicate records and supports comprehensive data cleansing and reconciliation efforts. This process enhances the reliability of asset data, streamlines inventory management, and helps ensure that organizational records remain consistent, accurate, and up to date.
Example
During a routine data quality review, the Asset Management Team uses the Device Origins report to identify devices that are being reported inconsistently across systems.
By filtering the report to show devices with an Origin Count > 1, the team observes that several physical desktops are reported by both Microsoft SCCM and Active Directory, but with slightly different environment names.
This insight enables the team to:
Validate which system reflects the correct environment
Correct inconsistencies between SCCM and directory data
Remove redundant or outdated device entries
Strengthen the single source of truth for physical device records
As a result, the organization improves data consistency, prevents duplication during audits, and maintains reliable device inventory records for accurate operational reporting.
